The first vegetable gardens

For those who have little patience for mother nature turn the hands of time for planting time that there are some things you can do to start early in your garden. You will not be able to grow tomatoes and other warm-season vegetables at first but you will certainly be able to get an advance on the cultures of cold season.

The first order of business is to discover the last frost date in your area that this information is available at your local Cooperative Extension Office. There is no exact date, but an average date based on historical records. I would like to have the earliest date, and then shoot for the planting of two to three weeks before. So, to start seeds for planting outdoors, the time to count back would be two or three weeks sooner than if you were going to plant the last frost date more quickly. Obviously this is not without it's risks. There is always the possibility of late season storms and freezing temperatures that last for several days, but if the gamble pays off you'll be eaten fresh homemade sooner than most in your area.

There are some things you need to do to ensure success with the early spring planting. You need to create cold frames or low tunnels to help protect the plants from cold and capture as much solar heat in the first days of Spring, as you can. Cold frames can be placed outside of the garden and their samples of cold season can be sown right on them. To help the crops you should put the cold frames outside in the garden a week or so before planning to plant, after which they created for some days that will have helped the heat from the Sun to warm the soil.

Another method that can be used is short tunnels. A small tunnel is a mini green home that you can put in the garden to get an early start on planting. The basic premise is that you will put out in the garden that rims are spaced about two to four feet apart then wrapped with plastic transparent to imitate a mini casa verde. These rims are any metal that is folded to form the aro or can be made out of PVC pipe and attached at the top by a tube long holding each hoop apart that is called a MOULDINGS. You'll also need Fund hoops for the ground to prevent them from tipping over anchor. Once the framework is in place you will drape a sheet of plastic over it and using bricks or sandbags to keep the plastic down to the ground.

The only things you need to be cautious about is the accumulation of heat and dry. The heat in a small tunnel or cold frame on a sunny day can reach 100 degrees or more. Therefore, if you are using one of these you will either need to crack the lid open slightly in a cold frame or lift plastic tunnels slightly to let some of the heat until Oct. The other rhing is to observe soil moisture does not allow it to dry much or your plants will wilt and die.
