Why pay almost $ 10 per pound for lettuce fresh gourmet (which may not be so cool) when you can grow your own custom lettuce mixes at home, ready to be picked and eaten whenever you're in the mood for a truly fresh salad?
Lettuce is an easy to grow the culture that is ready to eat quickly, often in less than a month. You can harvest it after a couple of weeks for micro Greens. Prefers cold climates, such as in spring and Autumn and lots of light. During the summer, it can be difficult to keep the plants cool enough, resulting in bitter leaves or plants gazes seed.
There are many different lettuce and other Salad Greens (such as chervil, purslane) available. I recommend growing lettuce leaf instead of lettuce (the iceberg). This makes it easier to cut some sheets whenever you want. The lettuce plant will continue to make new worksheets for you to eat!
If you're new to grow your own lettuce and don't know what you will like or will grow better for you, try a prepackaged mix of seeds. These usually can be found where you buy seeds locally, or can be purchased online, such as the mixing of Master Chef, Mix of organic salad bowl and mix of glory of summer with heat-resistant varieties.
You can start your lettuce seeds wilted in the container they go live on or in small containers of starter and transplant them later. I would like to start my separately so I can arrange the plants in a larger container to give an attractive design. Cover the seed with a very thin layer of soil and keep them moist. Indoors should spring up in two days a week.
If you started the plants separately you can transplant them when they are two to three weeks of age. Once they've recovered transplant, cake them outside for a few days before to keep them out.
Lettuce has a shallow root system and needs to be watered very regularly, especially when the weather warms. When the weather gets hot you can move your lettuce in the shade of taller plants, or move the container to a cooler location, perhaps one that does not receive sunlight throughout the day, You can also build a small shadow on partially block the Sun.
If your plants look like they are preparing to screw (you'll learn to recognize it), you can try to cavá them up and replant them. This shock can cause the plant to focus on its roots and achieving growing again, instead of making seeds.
Harvesting your lettuce you can carefully break the foil, taking care not to disturb the roots or pulling the plant soil right, or use a clean set of scissors or shears to cut the sheet along the ground. A quick wash and spin in a salad spinner (or gently pat dry with paper towels) and you're ready to go!
Lettuce alone can make a decent salad, but you can take it to the next level by adding some non-lettuce plants. Maybe a little mint to give fresh and refreshing character? How about some salad burnet, which tastes like Cucumber? Arugula makes a spicy, peppery flavor.
Once you start eating their own home-grown lettuce that you wonder why you didn't start years ago. Enjoy their salads fresher, healthier and tastier!
