Was trying to discover if garden seeds have a shelf for years and found no answers. I know that old seeds will not germinate. Compare this to grain farmers, when they make their germination tests. It seems that its seeds which have sheltered only sometimes are very low in germination, but nobody seems to know what causes this dilemma!
However, I tend to buy my seed from reputable seed companies where I personally know that these seeds are turned (bought) at an alarming rate. I also make sure that they order these seeds same each Spring so I am trying to ensure that new seeds.
I plant my seed packets that have this year, the date printed on them and see if there are packages which have a guaranteed germination percentage. The germination percentage is something that I watch closely because I really don't want to waste my time and money on seeds will germinate!
In this day and age, most seeds are not treated with fungicides. These fungicides prevent the fungus that causes damping off of destroying their seedlings. However, because the root rot is prevalent here where I live, I have a problem with damping off. Captan (a killer fungus) is available at most garden centres. Then I'll take a correspondence paper and immerse approximately one quarter in captan. The amount of fungicide that sticks to the game is about the right amount of a small packet of seeds. Then I'll put this bit of captan in the package along with the seeds and stir like crazy. Now you can be pretty sure that my seedlings damping off will secure and similar problems, as the rottenness of the seed.
Based on who you asked for that seed grow well in your area, don't be too negative. If your own favorite tomato variety is not recommended for your area, don't abandon it if it has been doing well for you. But you would like to experience some of the other varieties as well.
Much for seed germination testing, I use a small sponge that usually purchase for under $ 1.00. So I spread it around 10 pips. I make the sponge is wet and sometimes I covered it with plastic film to create a greenhouse effect (or so I call it personally). Make sure that this sponge is kept moist at all times. Typically 4 to 10 days, when the seeds had time to germinate, count the number of seeds which have germinated. You can evaluate the rate of germination of your seeds there.
What I just described to you was the method of a farmer of germination tests, and I found that it works very well for me and my purpose. You may have this same seed analyzed, but that is expensive and time-consuming. Then I stick to the old farmer and do well.
Are you going to do seed germination test on your own, or have a company do it for you?
