Keep it simple. Some gardeners believe that each type of installation requires a special soil mixture and likes to work out complicated mixtures of ingredients of five or six. A simple combination of peat and vermiculite, perlite or sand, can be used with almost all types of plants, cacti for tropical fish. In this case, however, you must modify the routine watering in accordance with the demands of the individual plant. This does not mean that you should not modify the mix that you purchase. On the contrary, if the mixture is so mild that the container tips a slight wind, add some sand.
Many gardeners, unwilling to leave well enough alone, add garden topsoil for the mixture to the planting of shrubs or trees in containers. When you add soil, lose all the advantages of a sterile mixture. For example, if you were to grow container tomatoes in a soilless mix to prevent tomato soilborne diseases, would not pay to add the garden soil. This is tantamount to inviting back the same disease that so scrupulously attempted to fend off! Soilless mixes are free of harmful organisms, disease, weed seeds and insects. All the nutrients required for plant growth are usually included in the initial mix. Soilless mixes are ready for immediate use. A bag of 2-cubic-foot has enough media from 20 to 22 gallon-size containers or pots of 35 to 40, 6 inches deep. You will need 4 cubic metres for a planter box 24 "x 36" x 8 "deep. The light weight of the Jiffy Mix and other mixtures of peat/vermiculite is useful when it is time to move containers from one point to another, or when your "Patio" is a terrace or balcony, where the weight is a problem. Jiffy Mix weighs less than half as much as garden soil when both are soaked.
Use a shovel spoon to mix the ingredients in a cone-shaped pile, allowing each shovelful dribble down the cone. To mix well, it is better to rebuild the cone in three to five times. Moisten the mix that you go. (Dry Peat is much easier to get wet with warm water than cold). If you do not want to use the combination soon after, store it in plastic bags or plastic garbage cans. Mix smaller quantities by reducing the amounts of the ingredients proportionately.
A cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet or 22 acres. However, contraction of 15-20% occurs in the mix because of the loss of airspace. For a backyard full of mixture, use an additional acres of four or five cubic feet. To obtain a backyard full of mixture, use 26 acres or 32 cubic feet.
